Olivia Ruiz

Olivia Ruiz, french singer, composer and lyricist born in Carcassonne to a musical family under the name Olivia Blanc. Later she took her grandmothers maden name Ruiz. Only 15-year-old Olivia founded a rock spirited band Les Five with her friends and later she sang in a duo calles Les Amants.
2001 she signed in a Idols like competition called Star Academy. She was second while Jenifer Bartoli won.
She has released four albums between 2003 and 2009 and one live album in 2010 after a great tourné.
Year 2011 is sacrificed for movie  "Un jour mon père viendra"  ("One day my dad comes") where Olivia Ruiz plays Chloé. The movie will come out 28.09.2011.
Thoug I myself don't like Idols and stuff like that I have to admit that those programms sometimes do creat something very good...
Style of the music videos of Olivia Ruiz mixes costumes and plays with colours. It brings Christophe Maé into my mind and the coulours are bright as in the movie Amelie. You shoud also listen to the track "Les crêpes aux champignons".

Check also: "Elle panique" ("She paniques"), "Les crêpes aux champignons"("Pancakes of mushrooms"), "Peur du noir" live ("Fear of dark"), "Les météores" ("Meteorites"), MySpace .

Peur de noir is a circus like track with choir musical stylish singing and feeling. I can imagine a twisted clown face bumpin from a box and the dark corners of the frightening room...

(Olivia Ruiz / Olivia Ruiz, Mathias Malzieu)

FEAR OF THE DARK
I would like to ask for a night light from my mother
The door opens and lights are on in corridor
I fear that it will nurish my agony
I fear what it will bring, I have allways feared the dark
I know it, I feel it, the phantom is waiting for me

*They are teeming, the whits of fear, in my stomage
They are dancing, I fall asleep
 And my mum stays awake.*

I wrap myself into the blancket but a watch for the vivid eye
And I listen to, I survey every movement
The shadow of a gohst is waiting for me
Lurking on the mat, I know it, I feel it
I'm afraid, I'm nervous, it burns the dreams of children

*They are dancing, the whits of fear, in my stomage
They are teeming, I fall asleep
They are dancing, the whits of fear, in my stomage
They are playing, I fall asleep
 And my mum stays awake*

Closing eyes would be the border of the forrest
Where I'd stuck and be paralyzed by the dread
I cry for to keep my eyes wide open
For not to risk myself

*They are dancing, the whits of fear, in my stomage
They are teeming, I fall asleep
They are dancing, the whits of fear, in my stomage
They are playing, I fall asleep
They are dancing, the whits of fear, in my stomage
They are teeming, I fall asleep*

Veronica Maggio

photo is from here
Swedish/Italian singer Veronica Maggio published her first single in 2006 at the age of 25. Her music styles are pop and soul and she won a Grammis as "Newcomer of the Year" spring in 2007. Some have called Maggio's music as "style pop".

She started choir singing at the age of 9 but she got boored to it so she started to sing jazz too. She told to Findance.com that her music has got influences mostly from jazz, soul and hip hop but also from Swedish folkmusic and also the Northern sadness exists in the melody. She is half Italian and she lived her childhood in Italy. Maggio doesn't think to continue singing in Italian because she likes Swedish language so nice to sing. Maybe someday. Now she has conquering the North: Norway, Denmark and Finland.

Know more about Veronica Maggio by reading the interview in The Local (Sweden's news in English).

I STADEN VÄXER INGA BLOMMOR
Ingen kan se dig
Ingen vill fråga dig om hjälp
(Här i staden)
Alla ska bli nåt
Ingen är ingen speciell
(Här i staden)
Ingen bryr sig
Ingen hör dig eller ser
(Här i staden)
Husen skymmer
Inga blommor växer mer
Här i staden

Allting är viktigt
Alla har bråttom, det går fort
(Här i staden)
Sommar var det bättre
Alla ska bli en ny person
(Här i staden)
Alla sliter
Alltid trötta från igår
(Här i staden)
Allt kan bytas
Inget lever längre än ett år
Här i staden

För i staden växer inga blommor, nej
Oooh, för i staden växer inga blommor

IN THE CITY GROWS NO FLOWERS
No one can see you
Nobody wants to ask you to help
(Here in the city)
Everyone will become something
No one is no one special
(Here in the city)
No one cares
Nobody hears you or sees
(Here in the city)
A house gets dark
The flowers grow no more
Here in the city

Everything is important
Everyone is in hurry it goes fast
(Here in the city)
Summertime it was better
Everyone will be a new person
(Here in the city)
Everyone drudges
Allways tired from yesterday
(Here in the city)
Everything can be changed
Nothing lives more than one day
Here in the city

Because in the city grows no flowers, no
Oooh, because in the city grows no flowers

Alizée

photo is from here
Alizée (Alizée Jacotey) is a French singer from Corse. Most of her songs are too sweet and shiny for me to listen (like J'ai pas 20 ans ("I'm not 20")). Nicely said they are too much for my ears. There are few songs that are on the limit:"JBG" (comes from "James Bond Girl") just because it's hilarious and the following song just because it differs from Alizées other songs.
Her latest and fourth album "Une enfant du siècle" ("Child of the century") was released this year.
She is married to the singer Jérémy Châtelain.

MY RESISTANCE
*It's a confusing labyrinth
Impermeable also
It's my Re... my way:
It's my resistance *

It's a refuge, chamber without a window
Where the air is clear, so clear
It's my Re... my way:
It's my resistance

It's a confusing labyrinth
Of laughs, of sparkles also
It's my Re... here
It's my resistance

It's a cave, safe like a father
Secret paths, the paths of glace
Little brother... it's.. also
Your chamber and resistance

*It's a confusing labyrinth.. *

It's a garden, where the road
Is also yours
It's my Re.. here
It's my resistance

A hidden chamber, a chamber with the cover
Of pirouettes of marionettes
Little brother, for you here
I am your friend

Mari Boine

photo is from here
Now before new latin artists we head to the North. More closely to the North of Norway. Mari Boine Persen is Sámi singer whose music is somewhere between folk, jazz, rock and world music. Sámi singing is called joik which is the Northern native way to sing. In her music you can also find traces of African traditions. Along with solo career she has composed music inter alia for a German fairytale film adaptation of "Hans and Greta".

In her music Mari Boine has influences of Laestadian movement for her first musical experiments she had inside that group of believers.

The latest album Sterna Paradisea was released in 2009. She has also English tracks but most of the tracks Mari Boine sings in her native language because her lyrics have deep meanings. She also has thought "maybe too much" about her lyrics which are normally about the nature or the struggle between the nature, traditions and the western world. Mari Boine has performed in Europe and USA.

LENE MAJJA

Lene Majja keeps on swirling,
She was spawned at the river's source.
Lene Majja knows she was born to move.
The great waterfall challenges her.
The rapids summon her
As she hears a new humming.

Lene Majja keeps on twirling,
Gets past the weir in the river.
Lene Majja sees others confused.
There is no danger:
She knows deep inside
She has never heard the voice that calls her now.

What is that drives her?
Who is that keeps her moving?
What is that always compels her
To go further and further right to the limits?
Who inspires her to continue and never to settle for less?

Lene Majja keeps on whirling,
Not giving up but dreaming.
Lene Majja knows that passes swftly.
The others try to stop her
And keep her silent!
She hears that enchanting voice and moves on.

Lene Majja keeps swirling.
Disobedient and cunning,
She leaves others to wriggle into the weir net.
She passes the mout of the river,
Hears the roaring of the sea.
She reaches that magical sound
And their voices become one

What is that drives her?
Who is that keeps her moving?
What is that always compels her
To go further and further right to the limits?
Who inspires her to continue and never to settle for less?

(The lyrics and the translation are from "Sterna Paradisea" album of Mari Boine.)

Chimène Badi

Chimène Badi is French - Algerian singer. Her first single was "Entre nous" ("Between us") and it was a hit for she was already known from Pop Stars - a French Idol type singing contest. She wasn't the winner but she is very popular in spite of that. Her first album was also a succes: it was the fifth on the  French list of bestsellers in 2003.

Her musical style is mostly pop but also soul and  R&B. Her voice is deep and strong - stronger than you'd think a 28-years-old woman have.

Chimène has also sang the French version of the theme of the movie "The day after tomorrow" called Le jour d'après("The day after").

This year she has released her fourth album "Laisse-les dire" ("Let them say") and shortened her name. Now her artist name is pithily just Chimène.

Check also: Malgre tout("In spite of everything"), Retomber amoureux ("To fall in love again"), Une femme à qui l'on ment  ("A woman to who they lie"), Le miroir ("The mirror"), Je ne sais pas son nom ("I don't know his/her name"), Je viens du sud ("I come from south"), Tellement beau ("So beautiful"), listen to Chimène Badi's music, Interview (in French).

POURQUOI LE MONDE A PEUR
(text: Elio/Julia Fajerman/Guillaume Dahan
music: Elio/Guillaume Dahan/Gerard Garocci)

¤ Pourquoi le monde à peur
Qu'est ce qui nous rend si fou
Pourquoi même quand il pleure
On le met à genoux
Pourquoi le monde se meurt
Qu'est ce qui nous tient debout
Pourquoi même dans nos coeurs
On oublie,malgré tout ¤

On dit les lois,l'amour
Les droits et la guerre
J'en vois prier le mal
Et peu s'en défaire

On sacrifie nos frères
On se fait vivre un enfer
Ca tourne à l'envers
Depuis des millénaires

*J'ai mal pour eux
J'ai mal pour nous
Pour nos enfants
C'est plus comme avant*

J'ai mal comme eux
J'ai peur pour vous
Pourquoi ne pas rêver
Que les Hommes puissent vivre en paix

¤ Pourquoi le monde... ¤

On regarde loin devant
Pour ne plus voir dehors
On laisse toujours faire le temps
Pour ne plus voir nos torts

On voudrait d'autre ciel
Et trouver le meilleur
Rêver d'être ailleurs
On en perd l'essentiel

*J'ai mal... *

J'y crois pour eux
J'y crois pour vous
Pourquoi ne pas rêver
Que les Hommes puissent vivre en paix

¤ Pourquoi le monde... ¤

On voit la Terre pâlire
Le désert grandir
Le sang,les vents ont tourné
Mais rien n'a changé

On est pas éternels
Faut pas perdre l'étincelle

¤ Pourquoi le monde... ¤

WHY IS THE WORLD AFRAID

¤ Why is the world afraid?
What makes us so crazy?
Alltough he already cries
Why do we force him to his knees?
Why does the world die?
What keeps us standing
Alltough in spite of everything
We forget him in our hearts
We forget - in spite of everything ¤

We say the laws, the love
The rights and the war
I understand to pray for the bad
And to let go a little

We sacrifice our brothers
And we let the hell on
It turns around
After a thousand years

*I'm hurt like you
I'm hurt for us
For our children
It's more than before*

I'm not well like you
I'm afraid for you
Why not dream
That people could live in peace?

¤ Why is the world... ¤

We are looking far to the future
For not to see back anymore
We never try to find time
For to see our faults

We would want to other heaven
And to find the best
Dreaming to be elsewhere
We loose the essential

* I'm hurt.. *

I believe in it for you
I believe in it for us
Why not dream
That people could live in peace?

¤ Why is the world... ¤

We watch the earth fading away
The deserts growing
The blood and the wind have turned
But nothing has changed
We're not eternal
We cannot loose the spark

¤Why is the world.. ¤

Lisa Ekdahl

Lisa Ekdahl a Swedish pop, jazz singer and musician is known around the Europe though she sings mostly in Swdish. She also has whole albums in English and her latest gigs were in Finland, in Turkey and in Switzerland...
She has released albums since 1994 and in 2009 was published her nineth album.

For some her voice is too odd to listen. I know people who hate her for she is so exceptionel.

Check also: Vem vet ("Who knows"), Hon förtjänar hela himmlen ("She deserves the whole heaven"), Jag tror han är en ängel ("I believe he is an angel"), Now or never, Du var inte där för mig ("You were'nt there for me"), Sakta, sakta ("Carefully"), Gå dit ifall du minns ("Go there if you remeber").

*Att vi är många som... *

BEYOND THE BLUE

¤¤¤ I saw a man wading down in the water
I asked where he was going
He said" I go there where my legs carry me
It will not be  so hard"

He told about sky and sea
He chose the most used words
But the words came alive when they camo out his mouth
Yes, it was like I suddenly understod  ¤¤¤

* That we are many talking about the sea
But few has sea in the eyes
Once I met a man with eyes like that
But none of them I asked knew where he was going
And we are many talking about the sky
But few can understand the eternity
I saw a man carring the sky inside him
But where is he going there is no one who knows *

¤¤¤ I saw a man... ¤¤¤

*That we are many.. *

He saw the sun in the eyes
He was light as the wind
He looked beyond the blue of the sky
When he went fell a tear to my cheek

*For we are many... *

Jane Birkin feat. Mickey3d

Jane Birkin is a British actress and  singer though she sings most of her songs in French. Her became famous in late 60's when she played in a startling movie called Blowup. She met Serge Gainsbourg in tha shooting of her next movie Cannabis and fell in love. Then the musical part came along and they released a song "Je t'aime... moi non plus" ("I love you... not anymore"). The song was openly very sexual - terrible scandal and it was prohibited inter alia in Sweden, Spain and Italy and it became a succee. The on-off relationship of Birkin and Gainsbourg was well followed and totally break up came not until he deceased. Birkins other songs never reached the same level that the first hit and he lived very quiet life until in  2004 she made a comeback with a duo album Rendez-vous ("Rendezvous"). Every song is duet with an other celebrity and though the album has been harshly criticized I myself regard it one of her best albums.

Birkin has been part of les Enfoirés a massive group of francophonic artists and musicians.

Check also: La Gadoue ("Slush"), The simple story with Feist, Je m'appelle Jane (live),

One of Rendez-vous albums featuring artist was the vocalist Michaël Furnon (in the middle) of the French rock group Mikey3d.  He is known as Mickey and the following song that he has made plays with their names Jane and Mickey: "My name is Jane.. Your name is not Tarzan, Your name is Mickey... My name is not Minnie".

Check also:Ca m'étonne pas ("That doesn't surprise me"), Méfie toi l'escargot ("Be suspicious snail"), Matador, Ma grand-mère ("My grandma").

MY NAME IS JANE

Say Birkin, what is that old accent that hangs with you and makes you look antipathic?
It's a British accent.
Say Birkin, why do you march in the slush thouh it makes your boots dirty?
Because I'm a girl.
Say Birkin, why do you sea you sex and then you sun as soon as the month of august comes?
Because, I'm in need of cuddle.

*My name is Jane and I bore you
Your name is not Tarzan
Your name is Mickey, I bore you
My name is not Minnie*

Say Birkin, why haven't you gained weight when you've got older, you're as beautiful as alway?
Because I'm sly.
Say Birkin, why do you stat to cry when someone is in danger?
That's because I'm sensible.
Say, Birkin, why don't you never get nervous, they say that you escape from anger?
That's because I'm fragile.
Say Birkin, what are those eyes that look into emptyness why they say that you are in the moon?
That's because I'm bored.

*My name is Jane... *

Des traces, que la raison

Menace de lave en fusion
D'espace, que les saisons
En face des murs de prison

L'audace qu'on emprisonne

Cette énergie qui résonne
Un cri qu'on abandonne

Unissons nos voix...

*Comme un roc..*

D'alliés, que les regards

Piliers qui portent l'espoir
Dévier, que les remparts
Dressés au pied de l'histoire

Ne lier que notre foi

Qui nous pousse à chaque pas
Scellée au fond de soi
Unissons nos voix...

*Comme un roc...* (3x)

Roc

Comme un roc

ROCK
Welcome to the rock!
Like a rock!
Like a rock!

*Like a rock!
Together like a rock!
All unite like a rock!
All such as a block!
Solid like a rock!
Together like a rock!
In this place like a rock!
Boosted together as one block!
Solid like a rock! Rock, rock, rock...
Solid like a rock! Rock, rock, rock... *

The traces, that the reason
Danger of lava in fusion
The space that we know
Against the wall of the prison

We dare to inprison
This energy that resonates
A cry that we abandon

Let's unite our voices...

*Like a rock...*

The allies that look at them
The pillars that bear the hope
Drifting, that the ramparts
Fallen down to the feet of history

We are tied up by our faith
That push us with every step
Sealed in the ground of oneself
Let's unite our voices...
*Like a rock...*

Rock
Like a rock

I'LL FOLLOW THE NIGHT
I'll follow the night
To wake up the day
To be with you,
Na na na na na na ney,
You'll give me the light
I need on my way,
You'll do,
Na na na na na na ney,
I'll follow the dream
We both have seen,
You know it's true,
Na na na na na na ney,
I'll follow the light
To breakthrough the night
For you,
Na na na na na na ney.

I'm all alone,
As the night is covering the sea,
Behind the storms
I am lonely, but I know I'm free.
An endless road fading down the hill ahead of me,
It makes me strong,
It shows the way to where I wanna be.

*I'll follow the night... *

You'll take my hand,
Cause the road will bring me back to you,
You'll understand everything I wanna say or do.
It just takes time,
We remember where we wanna be,
You will be mine,
You will tell me, that you stay with me

*I'll follow the night... *

SNÖ

(Music&Text: Laleh Pourkarim)

SNOW

When city is covered with snow

And the courtyard has became white

Then you know that I'm dreaming

I'm dreaming

I'm dreaming you here

When all is covered with snow

And the courtyard has became cold

Then I know that I'm dreaming

For it is snow

It's like clouds everywhere

Then you know that I am

That I still am with you

Even though I'm allways running

I'm where you hear me

If you can't hear me

If you do not

Then I'm gonna sing for you

Precisely so you hear...

I love you

So loud that you hear

And so it is

How long

Do you think

That longing can grow

Grow

If we are free

How long - how long

Summer has hidden it, yes,

Summer has hidden it

But I haven't forgotten

What is to love

And I love you

Yes, I love you

So loud

So you hear

And hunger stays in the voice

Not in the stomach

In the voice

That's why we don't speak about it

And so it is

It is so

I love you

So loud that you hear

It is so...

Loud, loud, loud, loud...

Here is what she has wrote of the song Woman that I have selected for today:

Woman is a song about someone in a destructive relationship who is looking for the way out. As Susheela urges her on, the song transforms into a mesmeric chant invoking the Goddess Kali, a kind of archetype of feminine power. Susheela’s family has long tradition of Kali devotion and the intensity that comes through shows it. The song also describes situations she can relate to in her own family history. Indian woman have often had to endure a lot…family and social structures are very patriarchal and women are expected sometimes to sacrifice their own happiness on the altar of family honor. Woman features the amazing Egyptian percussion virtuoso Hosam Ramzi (who has played with many artists including Peter Gabriel and Page and Plant).

Woman

Woman, where’s your dignity?
How can you lie there while the lover destroys you?
He doesn’t know your worth
But you bear his burden and make it yours
Why do you cry?

Woman, don’t be tortured by a madman
You’ve got to get out
The prison door is open

Woman
Oh, woman why do you rest here?

Is your love an ignorant sacrifice?
Roles you learned to play
Conspire against you and hold you down
Why don’t you fight

Woman, don't be tortured by a madman
You've got to get out
The prison door is open

Um Krim Kali e Nama
